Sympathy
By Paul Laurence Dunbar
"Sympathy" is a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar's use of figurative language and extended metaphor here is breathtaking. He is comparing a bird trapped in a cage to slavery and the pain of no freedom. Dunbar is a son of slaves. Dunbar often wrote about slavery and life in the South.
This poem is arranged in stanzas. Dunbar uses a ABAABCC. The poem consists 7 lines each. Each stanza how the cage or slavery caused the people pain & their desire to be free. Sympathy is a poem not only about a caged bird but about our lives in general; the way we desire for freedom, the way no living being can ever dwell peacefully in captivity. The background of this poem is the trails and struggle of slavery.
"When the first bird sings and the first bud opes"
Dunbar uses this line in his poem to say that the birds are singing songs of spring and that the flowers were blooming.
"I know why the caged bird beats his wing/Till it's blood is red on the cruel bars."
Dunbar uses this line in his poem to engage our senses. The speaker understands the birds frustration. The bird knows that escaping is impossible but still tries to stay strong and beats its wings against the caged bar trying to get away. The way it beats its wings against the caged bar it starts to bleed. This makes me feel sympathy for the bird and all the others that has been locked up and locked away. Dunbar seems to be able to understand and write this because he probably have went through the struggle of feeling/being locked up and locked away and felt the pain.
"It is not a carol of joy or glee/But a prayer that he sends from his hearts deep core."
Dunbar uses this line in his poem to describe the songs that the bird is singing are not happy ones; they are sad pleading for freedom.
According to my opinion, this poem is very much interesting. I believe Dunbar was talking about slavery and life in general we face things in our lives that scar us for life, and I believe he was talking to us today as well as tomorrow. At first when you read it, it's rarely confusing but as you read it over you start to catch the drift of the poem's background. The poem was easy to read. The poet was saying that he seems to be comparing a 'caged bird' to a human slave. The mood reading this poem was sad in some parts, & angry in others. The author repeats the phrase "I know why the caged bird" because he wants the reader to know that he too has felt this way. Connecting to the poem, i felt confused & trapped, then sadness, then sympathy. I felt this because once i figured out that 'birds' was a metaphor for slaves, it was sad to think about how they wanted to get away but couldn't. The speaker thinks slavery is terrible. Both of them are locked up & desperate to get away.
